South Africa takes steps to address unemployment among health professionals

According to South Africa’s Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla, significant work is being done to deal with the issue of medical professionals without jobs

The minister claims that in order to effectively meet the demands of the populace, the South African government collaborates closely with provincial health departments on all significant openings. This is reported by

According to him, there has been improvement in this regard in the nation’s efforts to hire qualified healthcare professionals.

Joe Phaahla reports that there were 2,066 health in the nation from January to March of 2024. These personnel included 1,121 first-level doctors, 579 professional nurses, 127 nursing assistants, 100 pharmacists, 91 radiographers, and 23 dentists.

According to Phaahla, recruitment procedures are still in the provinces’ efforts to complete the newly planned appointments, with the successful candidates starting work in May 2024.

Nonetheless, the government requires R2,400 million (US$125 000), or roughly R125.3 million (US$6,5 million), to fill the 2012 open medical positions across the nation’s nine provinces.

This figure excludes several types of health workers, such as radiologists, dentists, chemists, and nurses.
