South Africa’s Presidential Climate Commission submits initial comments on draft Integrated Resource Plan to President Ramaphosa
The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) emphasised the critical importance of electricity planning for South Africa’s economic development, particularly in terms of energy availability and affordability, with a focus on energy security. This is reported by
Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.
However, the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) project’s emphasis on electricity generation from fossil gas and “clean coal” contradicts recommendations for a rapid transition to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar PV, which are considered more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.
In response to the draft IRP, the PCC recommended further analyses of alternative scenarios to determine the optimal short- or long-term energy mix, detailed cost implications of the proposed energy mix, and increased consultation with the Department of Minerals and Energy.
The PCC also called for an analysis of the air quality impacts associated with various energy generation technologies.
