Russia unveils calendar of events for its BRICS Chairmanship
The key event of the year will be the summit in Kazan
The website of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship has published a calendar of events for 2024. It lists more than 200 events. The key event of the presidency will be the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Kazan in October 2024.
The calendar lists scheduled meetings of heads of agencies and ministers, cultural events, and negotiations with the participation of working groups. The geography of the events is diverse: some of them will take place in Russia and some abroad. Some events will be held online. Important meetings are planned in Sao Paulo, Washington, Geneva and other cities.
The BRICS association was founded in 2006. In 2011, South Africa joined the original composition (Brazil, Russia, India and China). In August 2023, six new states received invitations to become part of the alliance – Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Ethiopia, and Argentina. Subsequently, Argentine President Javier Milei notified the members of the alliance of his refusal to join the group. As of 1 January 2024, BRICS is composed of ten countries.
In 2024, the BRICS chairmanship passed from South Africa to Russia. Its motto is “Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security”.
