The 54th plenary session of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum has concluded in Mauritius. This year’s theme focused on the role of parliaments in coordinating disaster risk reduction and economic recovery planning in the SADC region.
Jacob Mudenda, who heads the Zimbabwean delegation, said Zimbabwe has been successful in maintaining food security through its climate resilient agriculture programme. The country has managed to harvest a record crop of maize and wheat. This is reported by

He also emphasised the importance of effective public debt management, which is a priority for Zimbabwe, and expressed support from Parliament in this regard.
Furthermore, by strengthening “a rights-based approach to doing business in the natural resources sector in the SADC region”, Zimbabwe has a policy of adding value and beneficiation to its mineral and agricultural resources, thereby boosting the mining industry.
Jacob Mudenda also said Zimbabwe’s Parliament will soon consider the Climate Change Bill which seeks to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and promote low carbon development technologies, including strengthening relevant institutions and financing mechanisms through co-operation with the Ad Hoc Committee on Climate Change.
The SADC Plenary Session considered and adopted resolutions on various political, administrative and financial matters, including the transformation of the SADC PF into a full-fledged regional parliament.
The 54th Plenary Session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum provided a platform to discuss important issues on disaster risk reduction and public debt management in the region. Resolutions adopted at this gathering are of great significance for the socio-economic and regional integration of the SADC PF.
