Life expectancy in Brazil in 2022 is 75.5 years, according to data released on Wednesday, 29 November, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Brazilians’ life expectancy statistics improved last year after two consecutive drops in 2021 and 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic claimed a large number of victims. This is reported by

The study was based on the 2022 demographic census – unlike previous years, when life expectancy was calculated using population projections based on the 2010 census and revised in 2018.

The information obtained shows for the first time the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on life expectancy in Brazil, and as such, IBGE has also revised life expectancy published in previous years.

“We made the estimate without anticipating a health crisis that would affect mortality,” explained Isabelle Marri, a researcher from IBGE, the data that were published before the revision.

According to her, in 2023, for which information will not be made public until 2024, life expectancy will show a further increase, recovering the losses suffered during the pandemic.

In terms of genders, life expectancy for women was 79 years, down from 80.1 years in 2019, and for men was 72 years, also down from 73.1 years in 2019.
