Former President of South Africa: Cape Town Conversation is an important event for the Global South
The meeting discussed the contribution of the region’s states to the G20 processes
Former South African President Thabo Mbeki emphasised the importance of the Cape Town Conversation, describing it as an important process for the Global South. He said the event brought together experts familiar with the challenges faced by Southern states and provided a platform for discussions on 22 different sub-topics related to the demands, vision and future of countries in the region. “I have welcomed the handover of the G20 leadership to Brazil to India. India has done a very good job under its G20 presidency,” he said, speaking on the sidelines of the event.
“The Cape Town Conversation” was held from 24 to 26 November in the coastal city of Cape Town, South Africa.
“The Cape Town Conversations” is an annual South African platform that brings together key stakeholders. It is designed as a common ground where experts gather to discuss contemporary issues of global governance identifying emerging challenges, finding possible solutions and shaping the world order of the future.
Topics such as the position of the South on various issues and the contribution of the region’s states to the G20 processes were discussed. Mbeki called for the rich experience gained during the event not to be wasted, but to make it useful in addressing the challenges facing the global South and promoting positive change in the world.
