Parliamentary leaders of the G20 (Group of twenty) countries have begun their work in India in a bid to promote global governance and support legislatures in solving problems.

On the first day of the ninth Legislative Summit (P20), following the inaugural address by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, participants are discussing the focus of the 2030 Agenda on the Sustainable Development Goals and the clean energy transition.

In his opening remarks, Modi emphasised the importance of public participation in addressing global challenges and expressed confidence in the positive impact of the P20 Summit discussions on efforts to achieve this goal.

He said the Asian country has held 17 general elections and over 300 state assembly elections since independence, with public participation steadily increasing.

More than one billion people will participate in next year’s general elections, said the Prime Minister. Modi invited delegates to witness them.

He also spoke about the recent decision to reserve 33 per cent of seats in Parliament and state assemblies for women. The politician said that more than three million elected representatives in local bodies are women.

He also noted that parliamentary bodies were a reflection of the country’s diversity.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko met Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit in New Delhi. The conversation took place after the opening ceremony of the forum.

After a discussion on gender mainstreaming and digital transformation for life, the P20 summit, which for the first time includes representatives of the Pan African Parliament, will conclude with a joint declaration calling for international solutions for equality, inclusion and peace, as reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
