On Wednesday, 12 October, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the plenary session of the Russian Energy Week (REW). The head of state emphasised that the Russian Federation has the greenest energy structure.

The Russian leader noted that almost 20 per cent of the energy produced is nuclear power, about the same amount, slightly less, is hydropower, and two per cent is renewable energy. He added that 43 per cent is gas, the most environmentally friendly fuel among hydrocarbons.

The President also said that the Russian Federation has large-scale plans in the field of LNG. Its output should triple to 100 million tonnes a year in the next decade.

“It is very important that Russian projects realise their competitive advantage in the market, including efficient logistics,” stressed the politician.

The head of state also said that Russia will continue to develop green energy, rely on new sources to make a complete transition to zero-carbon energy in the future.

“In the coming years we want to increase nuclear generation from 20 to 25 per cent and we will move along this path. Everything should be step-by-step and thought out, including on the way to green […] we will definitely move in this direction”

In addition, during his speech Putin mentioned that the Russian Federation will also take part at a high level in the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28), which will be held in the UAE from 30 November to 12 December this year, as reported by
TASS.

The UAE is one of the states that may join BRICS from 1 January 2024. The country received the corresponding invitation during the last summit of the leaders of the “five” in Johannesburg. Other potential new members of the bloc include Argentina, Iran, Egypt, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia.

The BRICS countries are actively developing cooperation in the field of alternative energy. It is most effective in the development and implementation of new technologies. For example, China is the largest producer of solar panels in the world, and its experience can be sought after by other BRICS countries that are seeking to increase their share of solar energy in their energy mix.
