‘E-voting can be successful if all citizens have access to internet’

The Independent Electoral Commission’s CEO Sy Mamabolo says e-voting can only be successful if all South Africans have access to the internet.

Mamabolo was speaking at the opening of the e-voting conference in Cape Town.

The three-day conference brings together South Africans from all sectors of society including political leaders, decision-makers, business, civil society and the public to discuss and explore the feasibility of e-voting in the country.

Mamabolo says rural areas still face barriers when it comes to digital technology.

“While digitisation is becoming more prominent in our daily lives, we must acknowledge that some portions of our country continue to have unlimited access to broadband connectivity, particularly in rural areas. In our discussion here let us not be oblivious that a significant number of South Africans still have limited access to technology.”
