Mufamadi lambasts AfriForum, Solidarity over US visit

Former Cosatu Deputy Secretary-General Sydney Mufamadi has lashed out at Afrikaner interest group AfriForum and Solidarity’s trip to the US, stating that both organisations want to undo the strides that have been made in post-democratic South Africa.

Mufamadi was speaking at the 70th anniversary of the South African Congress of Trade Unions (Sactu) in Rivonia Johannesburg today where he delivered the opening address.

His comments come as both AfriForum and Solidarity have embarked on a trip to the US to meet with the Trump administration on what they term is as a fight for the interests of Afrikaners.

“It’s these Afrikaners who actually do not speak for the Afrikaner community. The flotsam of the apartheid monstrosity. They are surrounding Trump because they want to undo the 1994 breakthrough. They want to undo the 1994 breakthrough. The broad front that we have to build must be one that is prepared to defend our sovereignty based on our constitutional democracy,” says Mufamadi.

Meanwhile, police ministry says it has begun verifying the list of farm attack cases presented by AfriForum.

This comes after AfriForum disputed crime statistics on farm murders released last week by the Police Minister Senzo Mchunu for the final quarter, 2023/2024.

According to the crime stats, only one farm murder was reported for that period. However, AfriForum says it has evidence of at least eight confirmed farm murders.

The police ministry also added that while verification is ongoing, no additional farm owner murders have been identified beyond what was originally reported by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Police Ministry Spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi says, “Law enforcement agencies continue to address crimes affecting all communities, including those in rural and farming areas, with the seriousness they deserve. The ministry further reaffirms its commitment to combating violent crime and improving safety for all South Africans. The SAPS will continue to engage with all interested parties to enhance crime prevention efforts and ensure that statistical reporting remains reliable and credible.”Additional reporting by Nomtsikelelo Mthabela
