ANC to meet SACP regarding contesting 2026 LGE: Mbalula

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says the party will meet with the South African Communist Party (SACP) for bilateral talks, to discuss among other issues the SACP’s decision to contest elections.

Earlier this month, the SACP which is in alliance with the ANC, announced that it would contest the 2026 local government elections independently, however the party stated that it would remain a member of the ANC-led tripartite alliance.

Speaking to media at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg today, Mbalula said the SACP’s decision to contest elections will have an impact on the alliance.

“We’ve got an appointment with the SACP in a bilateral. How is this going to happen? These are some of the questions we must answer. We don’t believe in this thing of the party contesting us. We don’t agree with that. And when we met with them, we cautioned them against that. We’re going to engage on that with the SACP.”
