Chairperson of the Public Service Commission, Somadoda Fikeni, says the government suffers from a trust deficit from its people.
Fikeni was speaking at the two-day anti-corruption day national dialogue led by the anti-corruption advisory council in Boksburg, Gauteng.
Dr Fikeni says government must learn to fulfill its promises to the people.
“We promise things … we don’t do things. We come up with things and provide them when people have not asked for them. And that is against that Chapter 10 Section 195 of Constitutional Values and Principles of Public Service which says people should be involved and people’s needs should be responded to.”
“People sometimes say we desperately need water, then people come and just build a community hall because we are busy with this monologue of talking to ourselves,” adds Fikeni.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) said the misuse of public funds was a problem that continues to plague the country.
Outa’s comments came as the world marks the United Nations’ International Anti-Corruption Day on Monday.
This year’s theme underscores the vital role of young people in driving change, promoting transparency and building a future rooted in integrity.
