President Ramaphosa reflects on a year of progress, challenges

As the nation winds down on the year 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa says this year has been better than last year, and was marked by triumphs and struggles.

Ramaphosa, in his weekly letter, notes progress through several features of the country’s maturing democracy despite challenges.

This includes celebrating 30 years of democracy, holding the 7th free and fair elections since the dawn of democracy, over 250 days without load-shedding, and more.

“The country has had over 250 days with no load-shedding. This is due to a combination of increased maintenance and generation recovery by Eskom, the addition of more capacity to the grid including from renewables, and the large-scale uptake of solar and battery energy solutions by households and businesses. The work of the National Energy Crisis Committee continues, “ says the president regarding load-shedding.

2024 election results announcement:

Ramaphosa concludes that this progress gives the nation hope for the year ahead which will see the country host the G20 Summit where South Africa will play an important role in addressing the challenges that many countries across the world experience.

“Overcoming poverty and underdevelopment, creating more jobs, and addressing societal ills like gender-based violence requires that we must all play our part, where we can.  On many fronts, this year has been better than the last. We will build on these achievements in 2025.”
