Parliament’s Justice Portfolio Committee starts with the process to appoint the next deputy Public Protector today.
The committee has shortlisted eight candidates for the position that has been vacant for almost a year.
This is the second attempt to find a suitable candidate.
In April this year, this process had to be abandoned after a legal opinion from Parliament that the presence of the former Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, indicated a reasonable apprehension of bias.
This comes as the then Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP did not declare her relationship with two of the candidates.
One candidate, Ponatshego Mogaladi, was in a labour dispute with Mkhwebane during her term of office, while Adv. Shadrack Tebeile had done pro bono work for her.
Mogaladi, Tebeile and Adv. Tseliso Thipanyane are returning candidates.
Other candidates are Dr. Chana Pilane-Majake, Adv. Dinkie Dube, Adv. Siphokazi Moleshe, Themba Mthethwa and Tommy Bunguzana.
These eight candidates were chosen from a total of 27 applications.
