Unisa hails Mboweni as a transformative leader

The Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of South Africa (Unisa), Professor Puleng LenkaBula has joined in the outpouring of condolences, for the passing of former Reserve Bank Governor and Finance Minister Tito Mboweni.

Mboweni passed away on Saturday after a short illness at a Johannesburg hospital.

Professor LenkaBula has hailed Mboweni as a transformative leader.

Rights of workers

Mboweni, who was the first Minister of Labour of the new democratic government in 1994, is credited with initiating and championing several pieces of legislation that were pivotal in entrenching respect for the rights of workers as one of the central pillars of government.

He was later to serve the country in the capacity of the eighth Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, a role in which he excelled for a decade and contributed to the stabilisation of the rand and South Africa’s macro-economic policy.
