Opposition parties welcome SIU probe into Limpopo Sports Dept

Opposition parties in Limpopo have welcomed the decision by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe alleged fraud, maladministration and corruption in the Limpopo Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.

The proclamation was signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa a few weeks ago.

It is alleged that between 2011 and 2017 the department irregularly awarded security tenders and appointed five managers without due process.

The department also allegedly paid suppliers for services not rendered for the Mapungubwe Arts Festival.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) chairperson, Lawrence Mapulo and Democratic Alliance (DA) MPL, Franco Marx say the alleged corrupt activities have resulted in the department losing millions of rand.

“As the EFF we are very shocked but we are not shocked. We have been saying this all along and we will be relieved when people are being arrested and have been shown the door. We want SIU to recover all the money that was spent irregularly,” explains Mapulo.

“As the DA, we are adamant that all corruption and maladministration must be dealt with as soon as [it is] practically possible. The culprits must be brought to justice. We believe that the people of Limpopo deserve clean governance and ethical leadership,” adds Marx.
