DA will no longer support bailout of SOEs : Steenhuisen

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says his party will no longer support the bailout of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

As the party marks 100 days since joining the Government of National Unity (GNU), Steenhuisen has outlined the party’s priorities, which will be announced later this month.

He says, “South Africa has spent over R350 billion in bailouts for SOEs over the past 10 years. This is one of the reasons why we’re in such a difficult fiscal crisis. Money that should be available and readily available for teachers and nurses is now gone.”

“It has to stop somewhere and we intend that it stops now. The implementation of clause 4 and 5 of BELA (Basic Education Laws Amendment) which opens the door to depriving children of mother tongue education in single medium schools.”

NHI

Steenhuisen also says the DA will also not support the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Scheme in its current form and the implementation of changes to the ownership structure of the Reserve Bank as proposed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

He says, “The NHI Scheme in its current form will bankrupt SA without improving healthcare or health outcomes and without advancing us a single step closer to achieving the goal of universal access to basic healthcare for all South Africans regardless of their income status.”

“And, fourthly the attempt by the EFF for a private members bill which seeks to change the ownership of the Reserve Bank.”
