The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has strongly condemned what it says is government’s ongoing negligence in addressing the urgent need for stricter food safety measures to protect citizens from poisoned food sold in spaza shops nationwide.
This is after the shocking deaths of five children aged under 10 years in Naledi, Soweto this week.
It is alleged that the children ate snacks bought from a foreign-owned spaza shop over the weekend.
ATM spokesperson Zama Ntshona says the government should formulate comprehensive strategies to combat the prevalence of poisonous food in communities.
“The need for urgent intervention is very clear. This is why we are also moving forward. We are calling for a comprehensive strategy to combat the prevalence of poisonous foods in our communities, including harsh penalties for those who endanger public health by selling hazardous products. The ATM insists on accountability for government officials who fail to enforce food safety regulations. The laws of innocent lives due to negligence must not go unpunished.”
