Scientists in China have discovered a new fish species from the Cyprinidae family, named Opsariichthys rubriventris. The research was conducted in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, in southern China, according to
CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.

Compared to its relatives, this new species is distinguished by its 13 to 14 predorsal scales and the presence of two rows of tubercles on its lower jaw and cheeks. Adult males also display distinctive colouration, with shades of red and orange on their lower jaw, belly, and other small areas.

Zhou Jiajun, a co-author of a scientific paper on the species, describes Opsariichthys rubriventris as a unique species inhabiting the upper reaches of rivers in the Pearl River basin in Guangdong.

According to the researcher, the species has a narrow distribution range and a small population size, highlighting the importance of its protection to promote marine biodiversity.
