Tibet reveals the thickest glacier in Asia
Glaciers are an important source of information about Earth’s climate history
Scientists have discovered the thickest glacier on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, known as Asia’s water tower. This is reported by
CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.
The ice field, nearly 400 meters thick, is located on the Purog Kangri Glacier in Tsonyi County, Xizang Autonomous Region.
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) found that the Purog Kangri Glacier is now the thickest glacier on the plateau, replacing the Guliya Icefield.
Glaciers are an important source of information about the Earth’s climate history. Earlier, scientists extracted a 308.6-meter-long ice core from Guliya, which took more than 700,000 years to form.
Now scientists are extracting ice cores from the Purog Kangri Glacier, which they believe contains even older ice.
