The VII International Forum “Russian Energy Week” (REW) began in Moscow on 26 September, with the main theme being “Energy Cooperation in a Multipolar World”. The event features over 30 thematic sessions and business dialogues.

On this day, the BRICS energy ministers met on the margins of the forum. This meeting is part of the calendar of Russia’s BRICS Chairmanship. At the meeting, the head of Iranian Energy Minister, Abbas Aliabadi, proposed connecting Russia’s power grids with Arab countries through Iran’s territory, as reported by
IRNA, a partner of TV BRICS.

It was clarified that this refers to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Minister of Energy explained that the integration of power grids would contribute to environmental protection and enhance energy security, considering Iran’s unique geo-economic position.

Aliabadi also noted that with the accession of five new countries to BRICS, the group could become a unique economic and political force. Furthermore, he stated that the group has extensive capabilities in the energy sector.

The central event of REW was the plenary session, which featured speeches by Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leader of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

During his speech, Putin emphasised that economic growth in the 21st century will focus on BRICS countries, as well as those nations seeking to join the group. The main objectives of BRICS, according to the Russian President, are to combine economic potentials and create opportunities for all parties interested in mutually beneficial cooperation.

In turn, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo expressed Equatorial Guinea’s interest in deepening cooperation with partners in the energy sector. Later, during a personal meeting with the Russian leader, he expressed his wish for the Russian Federation to support his country’s bid to join BRICS.

The Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, NJ Ayuk, in an exclusive commentary for TV BRICS on the sidelines of the forum, shared his expectations for the event. According to him, many discussions at REW will address the challenges of energy poverty and increasing energy consumption in BRICS countries and the Global South. He also commented on the expansion of the group.

Speaking about the expansion of energy projects within BRICS, Ayuk urged the involvement of the private sector.

“The private sector is going to be action drivers that make this work. And that’s why we need to improve the private sector to implement their vision. I think that’s why you see a lot of African representatives being here, because they want to see that happen,” he explained.

The International Forum “Russian Energy Week” is being held in Moscow from 26 to 28 September. REW is an annual event and serves as a platform for discussing the development of the fuel and energy complex. The forum is attended by government representatives from various countries, leaders of energy companies, and experts.
