Ethiopia stands poised to become the leader in horticulture development in the region

This was stated by Ethiopia’s State Minister for Agriculture, Meles Mekonnen

A national office of COMESA’s East African Community (EAC) Horticultur Accelerator Programme (CEHA) has opened in Ethiopia. This is reported by
ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

COMESA is a project aimed at enhancing the growth of the horticulture sector in Eastern and Southern Africa. The project also involves Ethiopia’s Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, the Ethiopian Agriculture Authority, and the Ethiopia Horticulture Producers and Exporters Association.

The office will coordinate and promote horticulture development in Ethiopia, especially in the production and marketing of potatoes, avocados, and onions.

CEHA will provide support to small and medium-sized businesses in these sectors through grants and technical assistance to create jobs, increase regional trade, and reduce post-harvest losses.

Tewodros Zewdi, executive director of the Ethiopian Horticultural Producers and Exporters Association, said the branch would help improve the quality of produce and address logistical challenges.

During the opening ceremony, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, COMESA ACTESA, and the Ethiopian Horticultural Producers and Exporters Association, which should accelerate the development of horticulture in the country.
