Capital of Kazakhstan to host SCO summit in July

It will announce the organisation’s expansion

The summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will be held on 3-4 July in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana. Belarus is expected to become part of the organisation at the high-level event. This is reported by the
press service of SCO.

The event will be attended by heads of state and government of 16 countries: India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Belarus, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Qatar, UAE, Turkey and Turkmenistan. Many bilateral meetings are scheduled, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“The SCO continues to work on expanding international ties. Last year, the 77th session of the UN General Assembly adopted another resolution entitled ‘Cooperation between the UN and SCO’,” SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming said at the SCO’s Ministerial Council meeting in Astana in May.

The SCO was founded in 2001. The organisation comprises China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. The observer countries are Afghanistan, Belarus and Mongolia. Partner states include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Turkey, UAE and Sri Lanka.
