Ethiopia plans to increase the share of local pharmaceutical industry to 47%
The Ethiopian government is actively working to increase the share of local pharmaceutical industry to 47 per cent as part of its medium-term development and investment plan for the health sector, Health Minister of Ethiopia Mekdes Daba said.
At the opening, Health Minister Mekdes Daba highlighted the government’s various initiatives to strengthen the health sector, with a special focus on increasing access to health services. She highlighted significant achievements in maternal and child health as well as prevention of various diseases.
The Minister emphasised the need to strengthen efforts to develop the pharmaceutical sector. The government has put in place mechanisms to achieve self-sufficiency in the field of medicines, including policies and regulations in this area. Mekdes Daba also mentioned that Ethiopia has produced medical products worth US$75 million this year.
The minister said the government’s support has brought the share of domestic medical products to 36 per cent compared to the previous 8 per cent. She also announced the government’s plans to increase the share of local pharmaceutical industry to 47 per cent. This is reported by
