Ethiopia works with international experts to implement sustainable livestock production

The country has the largest livestock population on the continent

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is working with several Ethiopian institutions to realise the country’s potential in efficient and sustainable farm animal breeding. This is reported by
ENA.

According to 2020 statistics, Ethiopia has 65 million cattle, 40 million sheep, 51 million goats, 8 million camels and 49 million chickens. The government is trying to optimise the livestock sector as it is extremely important for the implementation of the state’s 10-year development plan. Special emphasis is being placed on expanding dairy production, poultry production as well as fodder production.

The head of the institute Appolinaire Djikeng recalled that Ethiopia has made significant progress in modernising agriculture. He cited the increase in the country’s wheat yields as an example.
