The names of South African cities and roads to be changed

The system of geographical names is being transformed in the state

Though other political parties and the public continue to dispute this process, there are currently around fifty active applications in South Africa to rename various geographical features. This is reported by
BussinessTech.

The South African Geographic Names Council (SAGNC) reports that 58 name modifications are presently awaiting approval.

The country’s topographical features, such as cities, villages, towns, townships, mountains, rivers, airports, roadways, and post offices, will all have their names changed.

The SAGNC Board states that its goals are to modernise and reform the state’s geographical name system as well as standardise geographical names throughout South Africa.

Since its founding, the council has named or renamed 1,505 geographical features in South Africa, according to official statistics.
