Tunisia starts harvesting on pilot irrigated durum wheat field
The country is expanding its production potential
Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, Abdelmonem Belati, inaugurated the harvest in an experimental field sown with six varieties of irrigated durum wheat in Tataouine province. This is reported by
Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP), a partner of TV BRICS.
During a working visit to the province, Belati mentioned an agricultural project involving the planting of more than 420,000 olive trees.
The project is being implemented on an area of 100 hectares, investments exceed 4 million dinars (US$5,64 million). According to the ministry’s statement, it is planned to expand it and cover another 214 hectares.
The minister also noted that production could reach one million tonnes of olive oil, compared to 419,000 in 2019.
He also noted that 60 per cent of the olive oil produced this year falls on irrigated areas, which account for only 7 per cent of the total olive land area in Tunisia.
