259 parliamentary questions put to ministers remain unanswered

259 written questions from members of Parliament to Ministers were not answered by 27 December this year. This has emerged on a parliamentary publication list regarding unanswered written and oral questions.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu as well as Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson are the main culprits with 42 and 33 unanswered written questions respectively.

25 questions posed to Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber are yet to be answered.

The document has revealed that a total of 2 477 questions were asked to ministers under the Government of National Unity.

Written questions are part of the oversight mechanism used by MPs to hold ministers accountable.

Written answers are supposed to come from members of the Cabinet within 10 working days in line with the rules of Parliament.

This revelation comes despite Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s pledge in the National Assembly last year as leader of government business that he would crack the whip on ministers who failed to answer questions timeously.
