100 irrigation systems have been installed in Ethiopia
They have been built to improve agricultural productivity in Ethiopia’s erratic rainfall areas
Nuredin Asaro, coordinator of Small-Scale Irrigation Participatory Development Programme (PASIDP) at the Ministry of Agriculture, told that such systems are the country’s priority for low rainfall areas. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
Asaro said, that the programme aims are to improve food security, family nutrition and income of low-income rural households in drought-prone and food-deficit areas.
He also added, that a total of 116 small irrigation projects are under construction in seven regions with a total funding of $152 million. The remaining 16 dams are expected to be completed this year.
So far, Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia regions are the beneficiaries of the initiative and it is being expanded to other states in Ethiopia. The small irrigation schemes grow wheat, vegetables, fruits and other crops, he concluded.
